Google Duplicate Content Filter, How To Avoid It – From Google’s Own
Google tries once again to debunk the myth on duplicate content. In a recent posting on the Webmaster Central, Greg Grothaus from Google’s Search Quality Team posted about the Duplicate Content and Multiple Sites Issue. In the posting Greg mentions that Google does not penalize sites for content duplication.
Google’s Content Filtering is certainly a big issue with webmasters. We are in an era where businesses rely heavily on their websites to market their products globally. A so called Google duplicate content filter will certainly result in losses for these businesses.
Many sites, I really mean many, tries to demystify how Google treats duplicate contents. I Googled for the term “duplicate content filter” (exact phrase) and 2.3 million pages were returned. Articles from the Google Webmaster Central amount to quite a number of entries too. Just goes to show that Google have been trying to inform us about this for quite some time now.
To many Internet Marketers, the major issue is really not about internally duplicated contents. Webmasters are mostly not worried about the following:
- example.com/
- example.com/?
- example.com/index.html
- example.com/index.php
- www.example.com/
The above is easily handled with plugins and redirections especially if you are building your site with WordPress.
The most prevalent issue raised by webmasters is when they are penalized or “filtered” by Google when other sites take their content illegally. Google have been known to “filter” the original page from their search results while displaying the illegal copy. This is what irks webmasters the most.
Many have commented that this duplicate content is not an issue with other search engines. Is this really a problem that exists only with Google? How then are the other search engines dealing with duplicate contents?
Have you experienced the Google Duplicate Content Filter on your web pages? Did you manage to solve the issue? Send in your experience on this issue.
