Keywords Meta Tag – It’s Official, Google Ignores It!
Many Internet Marketers have been wondering about the Keywords Meta Tag. Many have suggested that Google does not use it in the page rank algorithm. However, there are a few who says otherwise.
Google has finally brought the issue to a close. They have officially stated in their WebMasters Blog that the Keywords Meta Tag is not used in their page rank calculations. Check out the following video explaining about this.
You can also read about it in the Google Webmaster Central Blog and Matt Cutts Blog.
Meta What? Hmmm, I gues you must be just starting up. If you are new and still learning up about Marketing Your Business On The Net, then don’t worry. You’ll soon get the hang of it. Just take the Insider Secrets and you’ll be just fine.
So, it’s official now that Google does not use it. How about other search engines? Some are saying that Yahoo! and Bing use the Keywords Meta Tag in their algorithm. Do we use it or not?
My take on this..
Since Google does not penalize if it is used in a responsible manner – no keyword stuffing, then there is no harm in using it. If other search engines do indeed use it in their calculations, then it’s a bonus. We do want to also rank in other search engines don’t we?
At the moment, my pages have the about 3 – 5 related keywords defined in the Keywords Meta Tag. I think I’ll continue doing this. One good thing about having the tag is – it makes it easy for me to identify the keywords I’m targeting for each page. It sure beats having to figure it out from the title and content.
I guess the Keywords Meta Tag is no longer a thing to factor in when you are optimizing your pages for traffic from the Google Search Engine.
What about other Meta Tags? According to Google, they do use the Description Meta Tag. However, it’s not used in the ranking calculation. It’s merely used to display excerpt from the page if relevant to the searched phrase.
Thus, the Description Meta Tag also has no value in terms of page ranking. I still think it’s important, nevertheless. It should be filled with a short selling pitch relevant to your targeted keyword phrase. This is to entice prospect searchers to visit your website from reading the description you’ve put in.
